Glazers Put the Go in Gruden

January 19th, 2009. Filed under: Monday's Musings.

It certainly took long enough!  Seven years ago they traded in a man of dignity, talent and honor for Jon Gruden as head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs.  I still wonder what they were thinking.  Yes, the Bucs went on to win the Super Bowl, but that was Tony’s team.  Year by year the members of a terrific NFL team were tossed to the wayside.  Year by year Gruden’s playbook grew until it became so large it scared away some really good players.  I’m not saying that the Bucs don’t have some good players, but it’s obviously not the winning team that it once was.  Joel Glazer stated, “…we just felt that it was time for a change.”  I’m wondering why it took them so long to get that one figured out.  They dropped Tony Dungy in a New York heartbeat, but it took them seven years to figure out that Gruden was not going to take the team to the level of unity and greatness that Dungy was able to do.

I’m looking forward to positive change with new head coach Raheem Morris at the helm.  Our prayers are with you.  Please feel free to read Tony’s books, Quiet Strength and Uncommon.  His books are better than any playbook around.
