Farm Collector
May 5th, 2009. Filed under: Tuesday's Tempting Reads. This is a magazine I recently stumbled upon. Well, not literally, but it’s a new one to me. I never really thought about people collecting vintage farm equipment. Many people collect vintage cars, so why not tractors and threshing machines? Along with some very interesting articles about the machinery, you’ll also find listings for shows and lots of classifieds.
The May, 2009 issue has an article titled Frozen in Time. It’s about a collector of ice cream freezers. Any of you all out there had the pleasure of cranking one of those things? About all you’re going to find now are the electric freezers, but I remember turning the crank on one of those babies.
Home made ice cream. Those words brought plenty of smiles along with the groans. At first, cranking those things were fun. All the kids would take turns and then pretty soon, it wasn’t fun any more. As the long awaited ice cream was nearer the frozen state, young arms tired easily to turn a crank that didn’t want to turn. Then it was time to cry and whine around so the men in the bunch would come finish it off.
Of course, since we did so much “hard work,” we thought that we needed to fight to be first in line. That little bit of arguing would sometimes cost us dearly. We would have to let the women, who did nothing except sit and talk, go first. That usually only happened the first time the old ice cream freezer was brought out for the summer.
After that we remembered to keep our mouths shut. If, by chance, one of the kids started to whine, we helped keep that mouth shut. You can subscribe at the Farm Collector website.
