Begin with Confession

If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

Murder in Disguise

murder
By Donn Taylor

Preston Barclay finds himself in the midst of mystery and danger once more.

When visiting professor Preston Barclay questions his long-time friend’s suicide, he receives threats. Press has enough problems already in proving his competence to students and faculty in the newly-hostile environment of the state university. For the new department chairman and campus radicals do all they can to undermine him. And the female siren assigned as his student assistant creates problems there and with Press’s courtship of his colleague Mara Thorn.

The more things don’t add up, the more dangerous the threats become, and the more determined Press becomes to clear his friend’s name and find the truth about the alleged suicide.

But can Press and Mara’s stumbling efforts to find the truth prevail against the entrenched forces of the police, the campus radicals, and an unseen criminal organization that increasingly puts their lives in danger. . . ?

ISLAND BREEZES

When is a suicide not a suicide? Or maybe it really is a suicide. Jordan Collier’s widow thinks he was murdered. His friend, Preston, isn’t sure what to think. He just knows he doesn’t want to get involved in an investigation.

He and his lady friend, Mara, get sucked into it anyway. It does get confusing as well as dangerous.

I enjoy Preston and Mara, but their relationship is very slow moving as they both are rather skittish. And the music plays on.

You can read the beginning of Mara and Preston in Rhapsody in Red. I didn’t meet them until Murder Mezzo Forte. Thank you, Mr Taylor, for these enjoyable books. I’m looking forward to the next Preston Barclay mystery.

Total Christmas Makeover

total
by Melissa Spoelstra
Holiday Devotional
Abingdon Press

In the bustle of the Christmas season, it can be easy to get swept up in all of the things to do. But it’s important to pause and remember that our priority should be to spend time celebrating Christ’s birth and not forget to invite Jesus to his own party.

Christmas is far more than a celebration of an event from long ago or a modern holiday centered around shopping. Mindfully take time to listen to how God continues to speak through the Christmas story as the Gospel narratives centered around the birth of Jesus provide encouragement and revelation concerning the love of God and his wisdom for us today.

In Total Christmas Makeover, author and Bible teacher Melissa Spoelstra provides a practical approach for you and your family to turn your attention toward God’s grace day-by-day as you prepare for Christmas. This 31-day devotional presents key scriptures, ideas to implement with each reading, and questions for reflection to guide you in rediscovering rituals, relationship, and rest to connect you more deeply with Christ this holiday season.

ISLAND BREEZES

I’m always up for a makeover book, but this one is different. It’s a makeover of a person’s insides and views on Christmas.

The world could really use a good makeover like this. I really like the devotional format and the way it’s divided into the three Rs. The practical approach at the end of each chapter really brings it home.

Thank you, Ms Spoelstra, for opening our eyes and hearts to the real celebration of Christmas.

Rescued Hearts

Contemporary Romantic Suspense

Children’s clothing designer Mary Wade Kimball’s soft spot for animals leads to a hostage situation when she spots a briar- entangled kitten in front of an abandoned house. Beaten, bound, and gagged by the two thugs inside, Mary Wade loses hope for escape when a third villain returns with supplies.

Discovering the kidnapped woman ratchets the complications for undercover agent Brett Davis. Weighing the difference of ruining his three months’ investigation against the woman’s safety, Brett forsakes his mission and helps her escape, the bent-on-revenge brutes following behind.

When Mary Wade’s safety is threatened once more, Brett rescues her again. This time, her personal safety isn’t the only thing in jeopardy. Her heart is endangered as well.

ISLAND BREEZES

This book is full of rescues. Some of them are quite surprising. It makes one wonder just how many times Mary is going to need rescuing. It really goes against her nature to give up control, and that does present problems.

This book has many twists I would never thought of, and I loved them. But I still wonder about that kitten.

Thank you, Ms Dougherty, for this chance to add you to my “I wanna read more of these authors” list. I’m looking forward to your next book.

A Woman Overwhelmed

overwhelmed
By Hayley DiMarco

“A Woman Overwhelmed” is a phrase with which many women can relate.
But what would happen if we could see the insanity in our pace and embrace our overwhelming God?
There is a reason they say that a woman’s work is never done- because it isn’t! As women, we often are overwhelmed by the demands and circumstances of life, resulting in stress, fear, worry, impatience, fatigue, frustration, and even depression. The truth is that we were created to be overwhelmed . . . not by life but by God! When we learn to be overwhelmed by God, the fruit in our lives goes from rotten to fragrant-filling our days with peace, hope, love, and joy
In A Woman Overwhelmed, best-selling author Hayley DiMarco shares biblical insights and personal stories to offer a glimpse at the comedy of an overwhelmed life while encouraging us to discover the depths and heights of God’s love and power.
Be empowered to find freedom in becoming overwhelmed with who God is-by learning to focus on what we know about God so that we can hold onto faith even when it seems that all is lost. For it is when an overwhelmed woman gives up the mission of me and exchanges it for the mission of God that being overwhelmed becomes a good thing.
Choose to bask in the abundance of the Father instead of the abundance of life as his unfathomable depths can surely replace our fathomable messes.

ISLAND BREEZES

I can certainly identify with this woman! Chapter 5 especially resonated with me.

I think just about all women have been overwhelmed at some point. Most of us just aren’t brave enough to put it out there for all the world to see. We may mention it to one or two close friends, but we really don’t want people to know.

I finally learned I don’t have to be a Proverbs 31 woman. God loves me anyway.

Ms DiMarco wades through life’s messes and inspires while doing so. Thank you, Ms DiMarco, for showing the world a messy and overwhelmed life that’s shared by many.

A Forest, a Flood, and an Unlikely Star

forest
By J.A. Myhre

Only thirteen, Kusiima has no time for school, sports, or hanging out with other village boys. Instead, without a father or a mother to take care of him, he works long hours to support his grandmother and sickly baby sister. Then one day, Kusiima’s life suddenly changes. A trip into a nearby protected forest suddenly presents Kusiima with many choices—all with an uncertain outcome. Should he go along with illegal logging? Help to save an endangered baby gorilla? Warn the Park Rangers of danger? Follow a donkey to who knows where? Step by step Kusiima chooses to do the next right thing that is right in front of him. As he does, he meets a mysterious doctor who holds the key to his past and his future. In the end the hardest choice Kusiima makes is to forgive a great wrong and reforge a broken relationship.

ISLAND BREEZES

Kusiima is the bread winner of the family. Taking care of his grandmother and sickly sister is quite a burden for a 13 year old boy who would really like to be able to go to school instead.

He had the opportunity for some extra work and pay, but that didn’t work out so well. He turned into a runaway instead.

He eventually ended up back home, but had to flee flooding with his grandmother and sister. Would he ever get back home? Only a special star could help him.

Once again Dr. Myhre has captured another special story in The Rwendigo Tales. If you haven’t already read A Chameleon, a Boy, and a Quest and A Bird, A Girl, And A Rescue, now is the time to do that. I’m looking forward to the fourth in this series. These books are billed as juvenile fiction, but I’m way past juvenile, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Thank you, Dr. Myhre.
