ISLAND BREEZES

Four novellas, four authors and four weddings. So where on earth does the kiss come in?

Reverend Miller had just spent a week at a successful revival meeting. That was the good part. The bad part was that he had just broken up with his lady friend because she didn’t fit into the mold of a proper preacher’s wife. While sitting around the campfire that last night, four older preachers decided to tell him about happy marriages between unlikely couples. Each of the four novellas is a story told by these preachers.

It was a long night, but Reverend Miller was just happy to be going home the next morning. He had no inkling of the surprise that waited there for him.

These four ladies are fine authors and I enjoy reading all of them, both individually and collectively. I’m looking forward to their next venture.

A Jane Austen Encounter

JaneAusten

By Donna Fletcher Crow

English professors Elizabeth and Richard celebrate twenty years of marriage with their dream vacation: visiting Jane Austen’s homes. But not even the overpowering personality of their Oxford guide nor the careful attentions of their new friends can ward off lurking alarms. When a box of old documents is donated to the Jane Austen Centre in Bath Richard helps sort through it. Later that night he finds the Centre’s director bleeding on her office floor. Could the letter that has gone missing lead to new revelations about Jane’s unfinished manuscript The Watsons?

Join Elizabeth and Richard on their tour: Visit all the sites so redolent of Jane Austen and her characters in the beautiful city of Bath; stay in the Chawton House Library to visit the charming cottage where Jane’s writing flowered and the nearby Steventon church where her father was rector; stand by her grave in Winchester Cathedral; and enjoy your time at the lovely country estate of Godmersham. But don’t let your guard down. Evil lurks even in the genteel world of Jane Austen.

ISLAND BREEZES

What a great holiday spending time in England visiting the places beloved author Jane Austen lived. But even dead, Jane managed to fill their tour with mysteries and danger.

“Logic can be such an inconvenient thing.” I really liked this musing of Elizabeth.

I truly enjoyed my encounter with Elizabeth and Richard Spenser, and look forward to many more.

I’ve never read a Donna Fletcher Crow novel that I didn’t enjoy. I’ve read all The Monastery Murders and will be following Richard and Elizabeth from now on.

AN EXCERPT

Elizabeth nibbled at a delicate cucumber sandwich and recounted their long-ago adventures to Richard. But they obviously weren’t lighthearted memories for her husband. He reached across the table and took her hand. “Don’t. When I think of you being in danger. . .”

Elizabeth laughed. “I don’t think I was ever in serious danger. Still, I wouldn’t want to be chasing murderers again.”

Richard gave her one of his wonderful, eye-crinkling smiles. “Little fear there, not with lovely, civilized Jane. No murder, no sex, no zombies.”

“Definitely no zombies! You’ll find us all purists here. Guaranteed.” Elizabeth started at the clipped, English voice of the newcomer and looked up at a woman with blunt-cut iron grey hair, her broad shoulders encased in a shocking purple blouse. . .

Solomon Harris is a high-profile attorney based in Los Angeles who makes a decent living representing the stars of Hollywood. He’s kept his distance from his father, Pastor David Davison, and his family, figuring they want nothing to do with an illegitimate son. But when he learns that his father is dying, Solomon travels to see him, wanting to know once and for all why his father never claimed him.

Dr. Larissa Wilkinson is only too happy to be there for the handsome, accomplished Solomon Harris in his hour of need. From the moment they meet, Larissa is intrigued by the man. But is he the man of her dreams—or a nightmare in disguise?

ISLAND BREEZES

Solomon received a summons from his father when he was on his death bed. Problem is,Solomon wanted his father in his life when he was a kid, but it never happened. Why should he run to do his father’s biding now?

The next problem was his attraction to a beautiful lady who he found out is a cousin.

Problem number three is the fact that he is included in his father’s will. That doesn’t produce any good vibrations coming from his half siblings.

Oh, yes. Dad wants Solomon to represent him in a court of law. What’s that all about?

Hey, none of this is doing anything to erase the bitterness Solomon has towards his absentee father and his family. It just adds to the confusion.

This is one messed up family, and one good book. Thank you, Ms Miller.

Blind Trust

By Sandra Orchard

Kate’s not sure how deep this deception goes–but she’ll do whatever it takes to find out.

Kate Adams had no idea she was carrying counterfeit money and can’t believe that it came from her sweet elderly neighbor. Or that it has landed her in the middle of another of Detective Tom Parker’s investigations. Determined to prove her neighbor’s innocence, Kate stumbles into a pit of intrigue far deeper than a two-bit counterfeit operation–and one that strikes too close to home for comfort.

As family secrets come to light, her world–and her budding romance with Tom–begin to crumble. To Kate, it’s clear that she won’t be safe until she uncovers all of Port Aster’s secrets. But then will it be too late for her and Tom?

ISLAND BREEZES

Kate thought she had a nice quiet life. Just when everything seemed to have quieted down after the attempted murder, she was accused of passing counterfeit money. It couldn’t be counterfeit, could it? After all, it was from that sweet little old lady next door who asked her to buy some groceries for her.

It doesn’t take long to go down hill from there. Kate gets mixed up with the counterfeiting, surly neighbors, suspicious young men, people trying to sabotage her work – even trying to harm her physically. Then there’s her stalker.

It seems that the only person she can trust is the detective working her case. But she doesn’t always do what Tom Parker tells her to do. Will she survive her hardheadedness? It starts to appear as if she won’t.

This is a good stand alone read, but it’s even better if you’ve read Deadly Devotion. I certainly hope Ms Orchard has a third book planned for the Port Aster Secrets series.

Quilts tell stories of love and loss, hope and faith, tradition and new beginnings. The Quilts of Love series focuses on the women who quilted all of these things into their family histories. A new book releases each month and features contemporary and historical romances as well as women’s fiction and the occasional light mystery. You will be drawn into the endearing characters of this series and be touched by their stories.

A Stitch and a Prayer

a-stitch-and-a-prayer

By Eva Gibson

A quilt becomes a labor of love for a lonely wife mysteriously separated from her young husband.

After her fiancé returns from the Klondike gold rush in 1897, Florence Harms sets about building a new life in her new marriage—even though the lingering effects of illness have left her weak and vulnerable. She and her young husband, Will, work tirelessly to clear the land around their Northwest cabin, content with their modest life.

But then a stranger comes knocking and Florence suddenly senses a restlessness in Will’s spirit that she had never seen before. When he leaves her with only a note that tells her he will return before their baby’s birth, she is devastated, and the illness that stiffened her joints returns. Counting the days until Will walks back through her door, Florence busies herself with a Tree of Life quilt displaying a map of the farm they call home. Doubts claw at her heart as Florence struggles to believe Will’s promise to return to her. Will her labor of love-and faith in God—sustain her as she waits to see her beloved once again

ISLAND BREEZES

Pregnant and her husband disappeared. She knew he would be leaving sometime, but had no idea when or where he would be going. All she knew for certain was he promised to be home before the baby came.

He could have at least said goodbye rather than just popping off with only a note left for her. But Florence put her trust in Will and decided to make a quilt for their bed. She stitched and prayed while working on the quilt with a special design.

The stitching wasn’t easy for her to do. Not only was she pregnant, she also had a chronic pain problem. Florence so wanted to have the quilt finished before her Will came home.

Well, the quilt isn’t finished, she’s in labor and where on earth is Will?

Thank you, Ms Gibson, for this intriguing story.

The latest book in the Legacy of Lancaster trilogy, Forever Amish introduces us to a young woman about to uncover a shocking secret and find an invitation to a new way of living. This is a story of forgiveness, legacies, and the ties that bind through generations.

It’s the Last Thing She Expects to Find.

Sally Bingham needs some time away to sort through the changes in her life and to rethink her upcoming marriage. Despite her ailing father’s hesitations, she takes off for a bed and breakfast in Lancaster County for a weekend away. But her best-laid plans leave her in a near collision with a bishop’s buggy and in the home of a mysterious Amish woman named Lizzie. Lizzie introduces her to a different perspective on life, a charming farmhand named Armin— and opens a Pandora’s box that will forever change Sally’s life.

ISLAND BREEZES

Sally decides to visit Amish country in Lancaster county. She keeps getting emails from a Lizzie Zook about buying one of her corgis. Lizzie just won’t take no for an answer, so Sally is going to straighten her out once and for all.

It all becomes even more confusing when Sally arrives and ends up staying with Sally’s family. Everyone seems to be okay except the father is a real grouch. Then there is that hunky Armin who lives on their property.

It doesn’t take long for Lizzie’s family to turn Sally’s world upside down. A lot of anger and confusion are stirred up around the kitchen table, and it doesn’t look as if it’s going to have a happy ending.

On top of everything, Sally’s snotty fiance’ Donald has vandalized her home. It looks as if he’s out and Armin’s in, but how can that happen when he’s Amish and Sally’s Englisch? Maybe hiding out in the Sunshine Secondhand Store will give Sally time to figure things out.

Thank you, Ms Lloyd, for another great book. I’ve enjoyed your Legacy of Lancaster Trilogy.

Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Left at the altar and disgraced in her small hamlet, she is being pressured to marry the eligible son of the London milliner. Puritan Barnabas Horton still grieves the loss of his beloved wife, but he knows his two young sons need a mother.

With tender hearts, Mary and Barnabas take a leap of faith and wed. But when Barnabas’s secret plans to move his family to the New World to escape persecution come to light, Mary’s world is upended. How could she possibly leave her papa and her dear sister?

And will she ever reach the secret places of her husband’s broken heart?

ISLAND BREEZES

Mary’s father wants to see her wed. It was disgraceful to have her left at the altar. Now he wants to get her wed to the son of the London milliner.

Does he bother to ask Mary’s opinion? She wants to marry for love. Eventually her father gives his blessing for her to marry Barnabas, a widower with two small children.

Barnabas had said he had no plans to sail to New England with his brothers, but he wasn’t being truthful. Several years into the marriage he dropped that bomb on Mary.

Along with the separation from her family, Mary has to deal with the continual comparison with his dead wife. He did let Mary know up front that his love would always be for his first wife. And then there are the children. The youngest takes to her as a mother, but the oldest always lets her know that she is the wicked stepmother in his eyes.

Life in the New World is filled with hardships and hard work, the the family difficulties are the real burdens on Mary’s heart. Will her husband ever love her? Will her oldest son ever open up his heart to her? Be sure you have that box of tissues nearby. You’re surely going to need them.

Thank you, Ms DeMarino, for giving us a view of our early history through Mary’s eyes.

Happy to be Alive, Because

By Chelsea Jacobs

Chelsea Jacobs’ debut novel is here just in time for summer! The perfect beach read, Happy to be Alive, Because (Nyree Press) will delight fans of YA authors such as Sarah Dessen and Krista McGee.

Avery is a seventeen-year-old girl whose reality has just been shattered by the death of her mother. Feeling a desperate need to flee from what has become her life, she follows a travel plan meant for her mom and her that leads her to the little beach town where her mom grew up. It’s there that she meets a group of three adventurous friends who adopt her into their circle, allowing her to experience a summer she never thought would be possible after suffering such a great loss. Unfortunately, her summer full of experiences threatens to end abruptly when she realizes that one of the three has a secret that causes her to question everything about the new life she has been building.

Avery must learn to balance her grief and her desire for a future in order to achieve her mother’s final wish for her: That she would be happy to be alive.

ISLAND BREEZES

A seventeen-year-old orphan. Avery as spent so long taking care of her mother and hoping, but life has let her down. She’s tired of everyone giving her looks of sympathy and wants to escape them all. When Avery discovers tickets and plans for a trip to her mother’s home town, she decides to go on her own.

Her mother also left her a journal so that she could continue what her mother had started – an “I’m happy because” journal.

Both the journal and Avery’s three new friends get her through her grief and to the point of happy to be alive. But one friend’s secret can either ruin the whole thing or make their friendship closer. Avery is hurt when she finds out. Now how will she react?

This book brings a new perspective to keeping a journal. It’s helped bring new meaning to my gratitude journal. I’m hoping we get a chance to read more about Glynn Springs. I want to know more about what the future holds for these four friends.

I’m also wondering if maybe some of this is a bit autobiographical, Ms Jacobs. Just a feeling from reading your book’s dedication.

The Closer

By Mariano Rivera

index

with Wayne Coffey

The greatest relief pitcher of all time shares his extraordinary story of survival, love, and baseball.

Mariano Rivera, the man who intimidated thousands of batters merely by opening a bullpen door, began his incredible journey as the son of a poor Panamanian fisherman. When first scouted by the Yankees, he didn’t even own his own glove. He thought he might make a good mechanic. When discovered, he had never flown in an airplane, had never heard of Babe Ruth, spoke no English, and couldn’t imagine Tampa, the city where he was headed to begin a career that would become one of baseball’s most iconic. What he did know: that he loved his family and his then girlfriend, Clara, that he could trust in the Lord to guide him, and that he could throw a baseball exactly where he wanted to, every time.

With astonishing candor, Rivera tells the story of the championships, the bosses (including The Boss), the rivalries, and the struggles of being a Latino baseball player in the United States and of maintaining Christian values in professional athletics. The thirteen-time All-Star discusses his drive to win; the secrets behind his legendary composure; the story of how he discovered his cut fastball; the untold, pitch-by-pitch account of the ninth inning of Game 7 in the 2001 World Series; and why the lowest moment of his career became one of his greatest blessings.

In The Closer, Rivera takes readers into the Yankee clubhouse, where his teammates are his brothers. But he also takes us on that jog from the bullpen to the mound, where the game — or the season — rests squarely on his shoulders. We come to understand the laserlike focus that is his hallmark, and how his faith and his family kept his feet firmly on the pitching rubber. Many of the tools he used so consistently and gracefully came from what was inside him for a very long time — his deep passion for life; his enduring commitment to Clara, whom he met in kindergarten; and his innate sense for getting out of a jam.

When Rivera retired, the whole world watched — and cheered. In The Closer, we come to an even greater appreciation of a legend built from the ground up. – See more at: http://www.littlebrown.com/thecloser.html#sthash.HX39f0PZ.dpuf

ISLAND BREEZES

I’m not sure why I signed up to review this book. I knew very little about baseball and nothing about Mariano Rivera. I wasn’t sure why, but I’m very glad I did. Now I know a lot more about baseball, and I feel as if I know the man called The Closer.

This book takes one into the heart of baseball as well as into the heart of Mariano. It tells of his love for baseball, family and God.

Here is a quote from The Closer that made my heart sit up and take notice. “It’s so easy to get caught up in the problems and complications and sadness that life can confront us with, but by opening my heart to the Lord, I am filled with lightness, with appreciation for the gifts He has given me, with the ability to pay attention to what is good and not what is not good.”

That, my friend, is wisdom that we should all hold in our hearts.

Thank you, Mr. Rivera, for showing us the heart of a godly man. If you were still the Yankee closer, I would be a huge Yankee fan. I wish you and Clara well as you work with the Refuge of Hope.
