Do You Need a Second Job?

March 27th, 2009. Filed under: Finance & Fitness Fridays.

I don’t know if I need a second job, but I do want one.  I’m managing to do more than just get by.  I’ve learned to live below my means and am in the process of paying down debt.  I keep looking at how many years it’s still going to take me to become debt free and that does get discouraging.  I work as a mental health nurse on the weekends doing Baylor shifts.  This is a plan developed by Baylor University Medical Center in 1981.  It involves nurses willing to work 12 hour shifts every weekend.  The bonus with this schedule is the fact that Baylor shift nurses work 24 hours and receive pay for 32 hours and full time benefits.  That also leaves time open to pursue a second job if so desired.

Until recently I was content with one job, but today I headed to the mainland for an interview to work hospital pool shifts.  If hired I will still be working in mental health, but in a hospital setting.  I’m looking forward to being back in a hospital again.  Of course, that’s assuming I will be hired.  It’s about a 45 minute drive, but I plan to start with just one night a week.  It was an easy drive and working nights means no rush hour traffic on the way to work.  I got spoiled here on the island with a more laid back lifestyle than when I lived on the mainland.  That’s one of the reasons I prefer to work the night shift.  But then, we don’t know yet if I’ll actually be hired.  That’s in God’s hands.  I can wait and accept whatever His decision happens to be.  But it really would be nice to climb up out of debt a little faster.  Are any of you all planning on getting a second job?  Is it a necessary move or like mine, a plan to work on debt elimination or building an emergency or some other fund?
